Today I learned...

... my bf feels very strongly about me taking his last name if/when we get married.  I couldn't be happier that he feels this way.  This conversation was sparked after a controversial article I read today.
What are you thoughts?

hello, and thanks for the follow! imo, part of getting married is taking your husband's name. there's no getting around the patronymics of most all of our names, for those concerned about oppression or whatever it's called.
that being said, i kind of like the idea of a "professional name," and then your married, legal name. does that mean i'm talking out of both sides? :))
congrats on the weight loss, and best wishes for keeping up the good work!
PS- i read your rant on 100-calorie snacks, and i couldn't agree more! i'm a sugar addict, and eating "healthy junk food" just stokes my fire. give me an apple and some natural peanut butter!

I didn't read the article, I don't need to, to know how I feel about this topic. I'm single, and one day I hope to get married. To me, taking on someone else's last name symbolizes the union of the two of you...or the two of you becoming one entity...in other words, one family, one unit. Two people becoming one- how beautiful is that? They share their dreams, their desires, their hopes, their passions, their bed, their home, their finances, their fears, their struggles, their name. Marriage is about you giving everything you are and everything you have to the other person, and them doing the same thing for you. I think sometimes people forget that this is the purpose of taking on someone else's last name, to symbolize that you are becoming one unit. I love it, I support it, and I can't wait to do it one day too. Yay for you!!!! I want an announcement when the big day becomes official!!!!
